Scripture:
“Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” (Ephesians 5:2)
Reflections:
Creamed Tuna on Toast…this phrase represents my earliest memories of Lent. I grew up in a tradition that did not allow us to eat meat on Fridays, so we ate creamed tuna on toast every Friday. Not the most anticipated meal of the week. Unfortunately, that is all I remember from Lent.
I’ve been a follower of Jesus for many years now, and although Lent comes around every year it has not generally affected my daily life. I might hear a sermon, read a devotion, or even feel a rare desire to fast, but there has never been anything I poured myself into.
But should Lent affect me more than that?
I believe it should…so here is what Lent means to me today. First, it means I have a connection. This connection is to a past history that goes as far back as the beginning of the church, to the followers of Jesus who have celebrated Lent for centuries, along with the current body of believers worldwide. If I really consider what this connection means, it is overwhelming and incredibly moving.
Second, Lent means I have an opportunity. I have a chance to grow closer to Jesus, to repent of sin and to renew my faith. The intense effort during this season can strengthen my faith to help prepare me for the turbulent times that will come during the rest of the year. I have the opportunity to give up something and dedicate that extra time to remembering what Jesus gave up for me on the Cross.
This year, among others things, I’m giving up creamed tuna on toast!
