Day 20 - Stones of Remembrance

Name:  Daniel Gluck (staff)

Scripture:
“Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer (which means ‘the stone of help’), for he said, ‘Up to this point the LORD has helped us.’” (1 Samuel 7:12, NLT)

Reflections:
Three of our Lent reflections have already mentioned the importance of remembering the deeds of the Lord.  It is as though God knew we need constant reminders of His faithfulness, that we might not become discouraged.  In the Old Testament, Samuel established a tradition of remembrance for the Israelites, raising an “Ebenezer” where the Israelites miraculously defeated the Philistines in battle.  Ebenezer simply means “stone of remembrance.”

One year, our family decided that Samuel’s idea would be a good practice for worship.  After my wife vetoed the idea of building stone altars all over our back yard, we agreed on the idea of a bowl of stones on our dining table.  Every New Year’s Day, we reflect back on God’s faithfulness that year, how He revealed Himself and provided for us.  We write words and dates on rocks with a marker, and look through those added previously.  Some stones tell of provision, healthy new babies and physical or spiritual healing.

It is a powerful practice to remember the works of God.  I encourage you to find a tangible way to document His mighty acts, whether with literal stones, a journal, or some other creative expression.  How quickly we forget God’s faithfulness.  We need visible reminders of His ever-present Hand in our lives.  Consider starting an Ebenezer today to remember how He has spoken during this season of Lent.

Prayer for the Day:
Father, You have been faithful throughout generations.  Just like you were faithful to the Israelites, you are faithful to me.  Please help me remember your faithfulness, so I don’t doubt you in times of need.  Help me believe that You always have my good in mind.
