Name: Parker Daniells (staff)
Scripture:
Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
You who are young, be happy while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.
So then, banish anxiety from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 11:7-10)
Reflections:
I fell on these verses my freshman year here at WJU and was completely overwhelmed. I was inundated by mixed feelings of excitement and simplicity. Even now, a rereading brings a feeling of refreshment to my soul from scripture’s simple concept but amazing reminder on how we should live.
One of my favorite things to do is to watch the sun rise every morning. To watch a sunrise is truly magnificent. The various colors of oranges, pinks, greens and blues are awe-inspiring: the beautiful colors of light conquering darkness. Taking the verse quite literally, I am pleased to see the light.
Of course, these verses are not a reminder to stay young and live like Peter Pan, or stay tuned for next week’s episodes of cartoons, but a reminder to follow our heart and to watch out for things that are pleasing to the eyes, to watch our actions and know that we will be brought before God in judgment.
Prayer for the Day:
Lord, help me to slow down and watch your sun rise, to follow what you lay on my heart and passionately give myself to you. Let me be mindful of the things that my eyes cling to. I lay all of my troubles--pain, wounds, sorrows, regrets, and doubts--before the feet of Christ because I cannot do it alone.
